'Roma in an Enlarged European Union'
22-24 April 2004, Brussels
Despite considerable efforts and funds dedicated to the problem in the past, discrimination against the Roma persists. Now, with the accession to the EU of 10 new countries, several of which have sizeable Roma populations, the time has come to ensure that this problem is tackled in a way agreed and enforced by all the main players.
'We need to ensure that EU policies make a real difference to Roma communities across the enlarged Union. All the stakeholders need to work together in a co-ordinated way. We can no longer afford a piecemeal approach to this issue', Odile Quintin, Director-General of the European Commission's DG Employment and Social Affairs.
The conference, on 'Roma in an Enlarged European Union' has been organised by the European Commission, DG Employment and Social Affairs and DG Enlargement, from 22 to 24 April 2004
